The Positive Place For Kids
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Johnston County (BGCJC)
has come a long way since July 2005 when four people, Mayor Harry
Blackley, Town Manager Jeff White, Jackie Lacy and Jean Kelly
met in Selma's Courthouse and agreed that concerned citizens would
like to provide our youth with more opportunities for a brighter
future.
Following this July meeting, Selma's Town Council and Mayor Harry
Blackley wholeheartedly supported the idea and offered use of
the former Ag & Band Building on the campus of Selma Elementary
as the first Club Building for the total sum of $1.00 rent per
year. After Jean Kelly and Jackie Lacy had a tour of the Boys
and Girls Club of Wayne County facilities, their Executive Director,
Mary Ann Dudley, agreed to visit Selma to explore the possibility
of the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County becoming partners with
Johnston County in establishing the new Club. In August, Ms. Dudley
and Duane Hinshaw, Southeast Regional Director of Atlanta, presented
an informational meeting to a group of 18-25 local citizens who
met in Selma's Courthouse. As a result, a task force was formed
that evolved into a Steering Committee of thirty-three members.
The Steering Committee was comprised of highly qualified professionals
in Johnston County with a vision of opening the doors of BGCJC
in 2006. At the direction of the Steering Committee, a Finance
& Resource Development Committee (RDC) was created with the mission
of raising start-up funds and two years of operating funds for
the Club. The RDC raised over $250,000 in grants and donations
during their first Founder's Campaign. Duane Hinshaw returned
in November to give a "Resource Development" presentation, which
highlighted the national organization's commitment to our success.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Johnston County began serving our youth
in October 2006 in the Selma Elementary School building. When
the Selma Ag & Band Building renovations were completed in December
2006, the Club moved into that building where it continues to
operate today.
