April Youth of the Month: Travis
Avery
Travis Avery, 13, is a six grade honor roll student at
Selma Middle School.
At the Club he participates in the computer lab, Power Hour, Passport to Manhood
programs.
He also serves as Junior Staff where his duties include tutoring younger children,
typing, answering phones
and helping with monitoring in the gamesroom. Travis and his two sisters live
with their grandmother, Linda Pough, of Selma.
Travis Avery, age 13, eighth grader at Selma Middle School
and member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Johnston County ?
Selma Unit is already aspiring to become a lawyer. He works diligently at
home, in school, at church, at the Club and in the community.
Travis interest in becoming a lawyer led to him being honored with "Travis
Day" at the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State.
Travis said I want to become a lawyer so I can help people and be a positive
example for my two younger sisters. All three are being raised
by their grandmother, Linda Pough. Travis credits his grandmother, church
and having Boys & Girls Clubs in Selma as major influences in his life.
Travis asked, Mamie Moore, director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Johnston
County to accompany him on the tour and she gladly accepted.
"Travis Day" began with Rodney Maddox, Chief Deputy began the tour
with the responsibilities of the Corporation Division. After meeting with
Mr. Maddox the tour continued at the Revenue building were he met and talked
with employees from different departments about their jobs
and educational backgrounds, including several lawyers. Robert Wilson, Assistant
Secretary of State took Travis and Ms. Moore on a tour
of the North Carolina Assembly/Legislative Building and afterward to lunch.
The tour ended back at the Revenue building after several more
members of the staff talked with Travis about the importance of education
and commended him on starting early to take steps in obtaining
